Erling Haaland Launches Chess Mates to Transform Norway Chess and Spectator Experience

Erling Haaland Launches Chess Mates, Aims to Elevate Chess with New Championship Tour

Manchester, UK – In an exciting crossover between sports, football sensation Erling Haaland has announced the launch of his new company, Chess Mates, which will play a pivotal role in the future of chess in Norway. The company is set to become a significant owner of Norway Chess and is poised to revolutionize the game with the introduction of the Total Chess World Championship Tour.

Haaland, known for his remarkable goal-scoring prowess on the pitch, is now turning his attention to the chessboard. The Total Chess World Championship Tour aims to make chess more accessible and engaging for spectators worldwide. “Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead,” Haaland remarked, highlighting the strategic parallels between the two sports.

Teaming up with Norwegian business leader Morten Borge, Haaland’s Chess Mates is set to inject fresh energy into the chess community. Borge emphasized the strategic nature of both chess and elite sports, stating, “Those are qualities that also define both elite sport and the ability to make sound investments over time.”

The Total Chess World Championship Tour will consist of four tournaments each year, hosted in different cities, and will crown a combined world champion across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. The initiative has already garnered approval from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a minimum of 16 years, with a pilot tournament scheduled for autumn 2026 and a full championship season commencing in 2027. Each season will feature a minimum annual prize pool of USD 2.7 million.

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess, welcomed Haaland’s investment, noting the immense potential for growth in the chess community. “The fact that Erling is joining us as an investor says a great deal about the commercial potential of this tour. He has an enormous global following and is truly world-class when it comes to creating magical sporting moments,” Madland stated.

Haaland’s involvement is expected to attract new audiences and elevate the profile of chess on a global scale. “I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world,” he added.

As the chess world eagerly anticipates this groundbreaking initiative, Haaland’s dual passion for football and chess could very well lead to a new era for the ancient game, making it more thrilling and accessible to fans everywhere.
