Chess Joins the Esports Revolution: Upcoming Esports World Cup Set to Make History
The gaming world is abuzz as the Esports World Cup (EWC) approaches, set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31 to August 4. This year’s event promises to be groundbreaking, featuring not only top-tier competitive gamers but also the ancient game of chess, which is making its debut in the Esports arena.
A New Era for Chess
The inclusion of chess in the EWC marks a significant milestone for the game, which has seen a resurgence in popularity through digital platforms. The partnership between the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and chess.com was announced in December 2024, with five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen appointed as the Global Ambassador. This collaboration has paved the way for chess to be featured alongside 24 other popular titles, with a staggering prize pool of $1.5 million (approximately ₹12.8 crore).
Indian chess prodigies Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram are set to represent Team S8UL, the only Indian Esports organization competing at the EWC. They are joined by fellow Indian star Arjun Erigaisi, who has signed with Gen.G, making waves as one of the first players to join an Esports organization.
A Unique Format
Unlike traditional online chess tournaments, the EWC will adopt a hybrid model. The top 16 players will gather in Riyadh but compete on computers in a LAN-style setup, rather than on physical boards. This innovative approach aims to blend the excitement of live competition with the digital format that has become synonymous with Esports.
Arjun Erigaisi explains, “While it’s still chess, the no increment rule will change the dynamics of the game. It’s a rare format that adds a new layer of excitement.”
The Esports Chess Circuit Expands
The embrace of Esports by the chess elite is evident, with top Grandmasters signing with prominent organizations. Team Liquid has secured Magnus Carlsen and American star Fabiano Caruana, while Team Falcons boasts speed chess specialist Hikaru Nakamura and French sensation Alireza Firouzja. Other notable signings include Ian Nepomniachtchi with Team Aurora and former World Champion Ding Liren with LGD Gaming.
Arjun’s contract with Gen.G includes participation in two Champions Chess Tour events and representation at the EWC, highlighting the growing intersection of chess and Esports.
The Evolution of Esports
Historically, Esports has focused on genres like first-person shooters, multiplayer online battle arenas, and battle royales. However, chess’s natural fit within the digital landscape has allowed it to carve out a niche in this competitive realm. The excitement of online matches and the strategic depth of chess make it a compelling addition to the Esports lineup.
FIDE’s Stance and Future Implications
FIDE, the international governing body for chess, has taken a cautious approach to the rise of Esports. While it neither endorses nor opposes these developments, tensions could arise as Esports events gain prestige. The governing body’s history of protecting its authority suggests that conflicts may emerge, particularly regarding the use of official titles.
As the EWC approaches, the chess community watches closely. The event not only represents a new chapter for chess but also highlights the evolving landscape of competitive gaming. With the fusion of traditional sports and Esports, the future looks bright for both realms, promising an exciting journey ahead for players and fans alike.
