Introducing the NextGen Cup: A $20,000 Chess Event Featuring African Diaspora’s Top Players and Personalities
The chess world is buzzing with excitement as the NextGen Cup is set to take place on February 6, featuring 10 of the African diaspora’s most prominent players and personalities. Among the confirmed players is the young prodigy FM Tani Adewumi, who made headlines in 2021 as the U.S.A.’s youngest master at just 10 years old. Another familiar face joining the event is FM James Canty, known for his streaming and tactical prowess on the chessboard.
Adding to the star-studded lineup is Nigerian national master and philanthropist Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa. Tunde gained media attention in 2024 after breaking the record for the longest chess marathon, playing for an impressive 60 hours straight. Other confirmed players include GM Kenny Soloman, IMs Justus Williams, Orlando Husbands, and Watu Kobese, as well as FM Joshua Colas and NMs Tersee Ferdinand and Goodness Odey Ekunke.
The event will feature a round-robin format with each player facing off against every other participant in 10+2 time control games. Fans can catch all the action live on Chess.com’s Twitch and YouTube channels, with expert commentary from legendary GM Maurice Ashley and Chess.com’s IM Kassa Korley. Special guests are also expected to make appearances during the broadcast.
