Exciting Changes Announced for 2024 FIDE World Championship!

The upcoming 2024 FIDE World Championship is set to be a thrilling battle between defending champion GM Ding Liren and the youngest challenger in history, GM Gukesh Dommaraju. FIDE has announced some exciting changes to the regulations for this year’s championship, aimed at encouraging more decisive games in faster time controls.

One of the most significant changes is the prize fund distribution. In a move to incentivize playing for wins, each player will receive $200,000 for every game they win, with the rest of the prize fund being split equally. If the match goes to tiebreaks, the winner will receive $1.3 million while the runner-up will receive $1.2 million.

In addition to the new prize fund structure, the time controls for the classical match games have been adjusted. Players will now have two hours for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the rest of the game with a 30-second increment starting from move 41. The championship schedule has also been revamped, with three days of rounds followed by a rest day, as opposed to the traditional rest day after every two rounds. This new format means that competitors will have fewer rest days compared to previous years.
