2024 FIDE World Championship: Ding Liren vs D Gukesh – Battle of the Titans

The stage is set for an epic battle at the 2024 FIDE World Championship match as India’s 18-year-old chess prodigy, Gukesh Dommaraju, gears up to take on reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China. The championship match is scheduled to take place at Singapore’s Equarius Hotel in Resorts World Sentosa from November 23 to December 13.

With the first game kicking off on Monday, the players will engage in a series of Classical games, with the first to reach 7.5 points being crowned the winner of the USD 2.5 million championship. In the event of a tie, shorter duration games will be played to determine the ultimate victor.

Defending champion Ding Liren expressed his anticipation for the contest, noting that he feels more at ease this time around compared to when he was the challenger. “Last time, my first World Championship match, I was very nervous, but this time, I feel peace and a lot of energy,” Ding Liren shared at a press conference.

On the other hand, Gukesh exuded confidence and excitement about the championship, emphasizing the honor of representing India on such a prestigious stage. The young Indian player, who has risen to number 5 in the world rankings, is considered the favorite against Ding Liren, who has faced a recent dip in form and currently sits at number 23 in the rankings.

Despite the challenges posed by his experienced opponent, Gukesh remains focused on giving his best performance and staying true to his game. Ding Liren, acknowledging Gukesh’s talent and determination, recognizes the young player’s potential to put up a tough fight.

As the chess world eagerly awaits the showdown between these two formidable players, all eyes will be on Singapore as the battle for the World Championship title unfolds. Stay tuned for updates on this thrilling clash of chess titans.
