Kolkata Girl to Represent US in Chess World Cup
Kolkata-born Tanisha Saha, a 10-year-old chess prodigy from Tampa, Florida, is set to represent the United States in the under-12 category at the Chess World Cup in Butami, Georgia, this June-July. With coaching from Kolkata-based grand master Diptayan Ghosh, Tanisha has been making waves in the chess world with her impressive performances in recent tournaments.
Tanisha, a fourth-grade student, caught the attention of selectors after her unbeaten run in the National Scholastic tournament, where she competed against 2,700 children. She also secured a ninth-place finish in the under-10 category at the North American Youth Chess Championship. Her parents, Tuhin Saha and Suparna Saha Roy, were pleasantly surprised when they received the news of her selection for the prestigious tournament.
Having started playing chess at the age of four-and-a-half at a Montessori academy, Tanisha’s natural talent for the game quickly became apparent. Despite neither of her parents being chess players, Tanisha’s keen interest and ability to learn by observing others led them to enroll her in a chess program.
Tanisha’s rigorous training schedule includes 4-5 hours of practice on weekdays and participation in weekend tournaments across the state. With coaching from GM Ghosh and regular sessions at the St Petersburg Chess Club, Tanisha is honing her skills and preparing for the upcoming tournament.
Her parents are proud of her achievements and grateful for the support from their extended family in Kolkata. As Tanisha gears up to represent America on the international stage, she continues to inspire young chess enthusiasts with her dedication and passion for the game.
