Seventeen-Year-Old Ukrainian Chess Prodigy Makes History at European Individual Chess Championship

Katowice, Poland — In a stunning display of skill and determination, 17-year-old Ukrainian International Master Roman Dehtiarov has etched his name in the annals of chess history by becoming the youngest and lowest-seeded player ever to win the prestigious European Individual Chess Championship.

Competing against a record 501 players, Dehtiarov entered the tournament ranked 126th, with a rating of 2452. However, he defied all expectations, finishing with an impressive score of 9 out of 11 rounds, securing first place half a point ahead of renowned Azerbaijani Grandmasters Nijat Abasov, Aydin Suleymanli, and Mahammad Muradli. His victory not only earned him a €20,000 (~$23,500) prize but also a coveted spot in the 2027 FIDE World Cup and an instant grandmaster title.

The championship, held from April 7 to 19 at the Arena Katowice, featured an 11-round Swiss format with a total prize fund of €100,000. The tournament was fiercely competitive, with many top players vying for 20 spots in the upcoming World Cup.

Dehtiarov’s journey to victory was anything but straightforward. After suffering an unexpected loss to Turkish GM Isik Can in the fifth round, he rebounded spectacularly, scoring 5.5 points in the subsequent six rounds. His final match against Spanish GM David Anton was a nail-biter, but Dehtiarov’s tenacity shone through as he secured the win, clinching the championship title.

A Remarkable Backstory

What makes Dehtiarov’s achievement even more remarkable is his background. Hailing from Kharkiv, a city near the Russian border that has faced constant danger since the onset of the war in Ukraine, Dehtiarov has shown incredible resilience. His fellow player, GM Pavel Eljanov, shared that he had attempted to help evacuate Dehtiarov’s family, but the young chess star chose to stay behind with his father.

Eljanov praised Dehtiarov’s courage, stating, “He stayed in one of the most dangerous places in Ukraine. With very limited chances to travel and barely any practice, he still became Ukrainian Champion. Now he’s grown up—and just caused the biggest sensation in the history of the European Championship!”

Dehtiarov’s rise in the chess world has been meteoric. In 2024, he became the youngest-ever Ukrainian Champion at just 16 years and five months, scoring 7.5 out of 9. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, he has continued to improve his game, showcasing his potential on the international stage.

A New Era in Chess

Dehtiarov’s victory marks a significant milestone in the European Championship’s 26-year history, as he is the first International Master to win the title since its inception in 2000. His achievement has sparked excitement and hope among chess enthusiasts, with many speculating that this is just the beginning of a bright future for the young prodigy.

As the chess community celebrates Dehtiarov’s historic win, one thing is clear: the name Roman Dehtiarov will be remembered for years to come. With his remarkable talent and unwavering spirit, he has not only made history but has also inspired countless others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
