US Chess Announces 2026-2027 Grant Cycle to Empower Women and Girls in Chess

St. Louis, MO – US Chess is thrilled to unveil its 2026-2027 grant cycle aimed at fostering the participation of women and girls in the game of chess. This initiative, supported by a partnership with the Saint Louis Chess Club, seeks to educate, retain, and promote female players in a traditionally male-dominated arena.

Since its inception in 2019, the collaboration between US Chess and the Saint Louis Chess Club has focused on breaking barriers and creating inclusive opportunities for women and girls in chess. The upcoming grant cycle will provide funding for projects that run from September 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, with awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants include educational non-profits (501c3), public schools, and US Chess affiliates with non-profit status. The grants are designed to support a variety of initiatives, including chess workshops, tournaments, and other creative projects that align with the goal of engaging women and girls in chess.

US Chess encourages applicants to think outside the box. While workshops and tournaments—especially those aimed at beginners or all-girls events—are highly encouraged, the organization is open to innovative ideas that cater to the unique needs of each community.

Application Details

The first round of applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. CDT on August 15, 2026. However, US Chess reserves the right to accept late applications or extend the deadline if necessary.

To qualify for funding, projects must meet several requirements, including:

  • Engaging a broad audience of US Chess members or potential members
  • Attracting at least 50% participation from girls, women, and/or gender minorities
  • Adhering to US Chess’s Safe Play Policy
  • Possessing non-profit (501c3) or public school status
  • Conducting background checks on event or coaching staff
  • Maintaining Limited Liability Insurance

Empowering the Next Generation

The overarching goal of this grant cycle is to empower women and girls through chess, highlighting the myriad benefits the game offers, from strategic thinking to improved academic performance. By providing financial support and resources, US Chess aims to create a more inclusive environment where female players can thrive.
