Day One of the 2026 American Cup: Caruana Strikes First, Women’s Leaders Emerge

St. Louis, MO — The 2026 American Cup kicked off with a thrilling day of chess at the Saint Louis Chess Club, where Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana made headlines by defeating GM Abhimanyu Mishra in a tense opening match. While Caruana drew first blood, the remaining three games in the Open Championship Bracket ended in draws, setting the stage for an intense second day.

In the pivotal match, Caruana, the world’s third-ranked player, showcased his strategic prowess against the 17-year-old Mishra, who is known for being the youngest grandmaster in history. After a fierce battle in the Benoni Defense, Caruana capitalized on a late blunder from Mishra to secure a crucial victory. “I wanted to be ambitious mostly because I lost to him in blitz yesterday, so I wanted some revenge!” Caruana remarked, reflecting on his motivation.

Mishra now faces a must-win situation in Game Two on Wednesday to remain in the Championship Bracket, while the other matches saw GM Levon Aronian and GM Awonder Liang, GM Leinier Dominguez and GM Sam Sevian, and GM Wesley So and GM Ray Robson all end in stalemates.

Women’s Championship: Krush and Lee Take Early Leads

In the Women’s Championship Bracket, GM Irina Krush and IM Alice Lee emerged as early leaders, each notching impressive victories. Krush, a three-time American Cup champion, defeated WGM Zoey Tang, while Lee showcased her skills against WIM Rachael Li, even managing to end the game with three queens on the board. “This might actually be the first time [this has happened],” Lee said, highlighting the unusual nature of her victory.

The day also featured two draws, with IM Anna Zatonskih fighting back from a losing position against IM Carissa Yip and IM Tatev Abrahamyan finding a brilliant resource to salvage a pawn-down game against IM Anna Sargsyan.

Tournament Format and Stakes

The American Cup, now in its fifth edition, employs a unique double-elimination format, allowing players two “lives” before facing elimination. The prize fund totals $400,000, with $250,000 allocated for the open tournament and $150,000 for the women’s event.

Day Two promises to be just as exciting, with matches starting at 1:20 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 4. Players will vie for a spot in the Championship Bracket, with the pressure mounting as each game could determine their fate in the tournament.

As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on Mishra, who must secure a win to keep his championship hopes alive, while Krush and Lee look to solidify their leads in the women’s bracket. The stakes have never been higher in this prestigious event, where every move counts and the thrill of the game captivates chess enthusiasts worldwide.
