Zhu Jiner Stuns R Vaishali, Shakes Up 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament

In a dramatic turn of events at the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, Chinese chess prodigy Zhu Jiner has emerged as a formidable obstacle for Indian star R Vaishali. In a gripping 12th-round showdown on Sunday, Zhu delivered a crushing blow to Vaishali, defeating her with the black pieces and erasing the Indian’s lead in the tournament.

This victory marks Zhu’s second triumph over Vaishali in the tournament, having previously bested her in the fifth round. With both players now tied at the top with seven points and only two rounds remaining, the stakes have never been higher.

Vaishali, playing with the white pieces, opened with the Caro-Kann Defense but soon found herself ensnared in Zhu’s meticulous opening preparation. Although she navigated her early moves adeptly, the pressure of the clock began to mount. By the time she executed her 16th move, Vaishali had only 17 minutes left, while Zhu still enjoyed nearly an hour on her clock.

The balance of time shifted as Zhu took a lengthy 35-minute pause to ponder her next move, leveling the playing field. However, the complexity of the position remained daunting, particularly for players like Vaishali, who have struggled under time pressure in the past.

As the clock ticked down, Vaishali faced an uphill battle with less than 14 minutes to make 23 moves. Zhu expertly maintained the tension, tying up Vaishali’s pieces and limiting her options. A critical misstep came on the 36th move when Vaishali played Rc1, allowing Zhu to capitalize by attacking her rook and advancing her pawn toward promotion. With no path to recovery, Vaishali was forced to resign as Zhu launched a checkmate threat.

The tournament has not been kind to fellow Indian competitor Divya Deshmukh, who suffered her fourth loss against Tan Zhongyi, a player who had yet to win a game prior to this round.

Heartbreak also struck for Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk, who, in a winning endgame against pre-event favorite Aleksandra Goryachkina, faltered at the last moment, settling for a draw that left her just shy of the leaders.

Meanwhile, Kazakh GM Bibisara Assaubayeva secured a victory over Kateryna Lagno, positioning herself just half a point behind the leaders alongside Muzychuk.

In the open section, Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov continued to dominate, drawing his game against World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura in a casual half-hour encounter, solidifying his position at the top. Anish Giri, the only player with a slim chance at the title, squandered a winning position against Wei Yi, while Indian GM R Praggnanandhaa played to a draw against Andrey Esipenko, effectively ending his title aspirations.

As the tournament nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on the final rounds to see if Zhu can maintain her momentum and claim the coveted spot in the World Championship clash.
