Team USA Chess Olympiad: A Call for Support as Players Gear Up for Samarkand

As the countdown begins for the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, set to take place from September 15 to 27 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Team USA is rallying support from chess enthusiasts and the general public alike. Unlike many international teams, Team USA relies heavily on private donations, fundraising, and sponsorships to cover the costs associated with competing on the world stage.

In this landmark year, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, the stakes are higher than ever. Every dollar raised will directly contribute to essential expenses such as airfare, accommodation, coaching, and meals for the players. This initiative not only aims to bolster the team’s chances of success but also serves as a testament to the growing importance of chess in American culture.

We want to show our love for the game and our team during this seminal year for our nation,” said a spokesperson for Team USA. “Your support sends a powerful message about the value of chess in the U.S.

Aiming for Gold

Team USA is determined to improve upon its performance from the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, where the Open team secured a silver medal and the Women’s team brought home bronze. The upcoming Olympiad presents a fresh opportunity for both teams to shine on an international platform.

The Open Team features a formidable lineup, including Grandmasters Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Hans Niemann, Levon Aronian, and Awonder Liang. Notably, Niemann and Liang will be making their Olympiad debuts, adding an exciting dynamic to the seasoned squad. The team will be led by IM John Donaldson as Captain, with GM Grigory Oparin serving as Trainer.

On the Women’s side, the roster includes IM Carissa Yip, IM Alice Lee, GM Irina Krush, IM-Elect/FM Rose Atwell, and IM Tatev Abrahamyan. With three returning players from the previous Olympiad, including the talented Yip and Lee, the team is poised to make a strong showing. GM Melikset Khachiyan will captain the Women’s team, with GM Liem Le as Trainer.

Join the Journey

As Team USA prepares for this prestigious event, they invite everyone to be part of chess history. Contributions can be made through their fundraising campaign, with every donation playing a crucial role in ensuring the players can compete at their best.
