Hans Niemann Takes the Lead at 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland After Day 3
Niemann Takes the Lead at 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland
Warsaw, Poland — In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, GM Hans Niemann has emerged as the frontrunner at the 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland, leading the tournament after nine rounds of rapid chess. With 18 rounds of blitz set to unfold over the next two days, the competition is heating up.
Niemann’s decisive victory against GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda in round eight, coupled with two draws, propelled him ahead of second-place GM Wesley So, who managed three draws throughout the day. Niemann now holds a one-point lead over So, with GM Vladimir Fedoseev closely trailing in third.
The tournament has quickly shaped into a three-way race, with GMs Fabiano Caruana, Duda, and Gukesh Dommaraju trailing a full four points behind the leader. Meanwhile, GMs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, and Radoslaw Wojtaszek find themselves even further behind.
Day four kicks off on Friday, May 8, at 8 a.m. ET, featuring the first nine blitz rounds. Unlike the rapid rounds, players will earn just one point per win, intensifying the stakes.
Niemann, the 22-year-old American sensation, has showcased remarkable consistency, finishing the rapid rounds with four wins and five draws, and no losses. He described his performance as “incredibly stable,” and expressed confidence in his blitz skills, having trained specifically for this format in the week leading up to the tournament.
The day began with a highly anticipated clash between Niemann and So, where both players navigated the complexities of an Italian Opening. Despite missed opportunities on both sides, the game ultimately ended in a draw. Niemann later triumphed over Duda, who opted for the Damiano Variation of the Petroff Defense—a choice Niemann found questionable given his preparation.
Reflecting on his strategy, Niemann quipped, “I don’t really know why you would subject yourself to such suffering!” His lighthearted demeanor belies the fierce competition he faces.
So, while disappointed by his missed chance against Niemann, managed to maintain his position in second place with a smooth day, including a quick draw against Vachier-Lagrave and a 14-move draw against Duda.
Fedoseev’s day was a rollercoaster, starting with a loss to Sindarov but recovering to win against Vachier-Lagrave in a dramatic turnaround. Sindarov, despite a rough start, showcased his fighting spirit with a bold strategy against Caruana, earning a draw.
As the blitz rounds approach, players like Gukesh and Duda are eager to close the gap, while Niemann aims to maintain his lead. Gukesh humorously noted, “In blitz, all you have to do is play fast and pray!”
The excitement continues as the tournament unfolds at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, with a total prize fund of $200,000 at stake. Fans can catch all the action live on the Saint Louis Chess Club’s YouTube channel.
Will Niemann hold onto his lead, or will one of his rivals make a comeback in the blitz rounds? Stay tuned for what promises to be an electrifying finish to the 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland!
