Niemann Maintains Lead Despite Tough Day at 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland

Hans Niemann Holds Lead Despite Late Struggles at 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland

Warsaw, Poland — In a thrilling display of strategy and skill, Grandmaster Hans Niemann remains at the top of the leaderboard at the 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland, even after a challenging day that saw him suffer three consecutive losses. The event, held at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, has captivated chess enthusiasts as the world’s best players vie for a share of the $200,000 prize fund.

After the first nine rounds of blitz, Niemann leads with a narrow margin of just half a point over fellow Grandmaster Wesley So, who also faced difficulties, losing two of his last four games and drawing the others. Meanwhile, GMs Fabiano Caruana and Vladimir Fedoseev are hot on their heels, trailing by just a point and a half.

Day five promises to be pivotal, with the final blitz rounds (10-18) set to commence two hours earlier than usual, starting at 6 a.m. ET / 12:00 CEST / 3:30 p.m. IST on Saturday, May 9.

Blitz Highlights

While Niemann struggled in the blitz portion, GM Alireza Firouzja emerged as a standout performer, winning five of his nine games. However, his earlier poor performance in the rapid rounds left him too far behind to contend for the title. Firouzja’s day included a stunning victory over Niemann in their first match, showcasing his ability to capitalize on even the slightest missteps.

“I took too much risk in some games,” Niemann reflected on his performance. “Losing three games in a row is a bit unnecessary! But I have to thank Wesley for just matching my losses.”

Caruana’s Comeback

Caruana, who started the day four points behind Niemann, managed to score significant wins against formidable opponents, including Firouzja and Gukesh Dommaraju. His resilience keeps him in contention, as he expressed optimism about his chances: “I’m happy I’m at least in striking distance.”

Despite a few costly blunders, Caruana’s strategic play has kept him in the race, and he remains a serious threat as the tournament progresses.

Wojtaszek’s Surprise Performance

Radoslaw Wojtaszek, the lowest-rated player in the field, surprised many by achieving a commendable score of 5/9 in the blitz rounds. His victories included wins against both Niemann and Gukesh, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level despite earlier setbacks.

“If we could exclude the first day… then you can say that I am playing pretty good here!” Wojtaszek quipped, highlighting the unexpected twists of the tournament.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament heads into its final rounds, all eyes will be on Niemann and So, who are locked in a tight race for the title. With the potential for tiebreaks looming, every game will be crucial.
