Exciting Day 2 at the 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland: So and Niemann Take the Lead!

So and Niemann Dominate Early Rounds at 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland

Warsaw, Poland — The chess world is abuzz as Grandmasters Wesley So and Hans Niemann have taken the lead after six rounds of the highly competitive 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland tournament. With a total prize fund of $200,000, the stakes are high as these elite players vie for supremacy in the first event of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour.

So and Niemann are currently tied at the top, each showcasing their exceptional skills and strategic prowess. Just one point behind in sole second place is GM Vladimir Fedoseev, while GMs Fabiano Caruana, Gukesh Dommaraju, and Jan-Krzysztof Duda trail by two points, setting the stage for an exciting final day of rapid chess.

A Day of Ups and Downs

The day began with a flurry of activity, as five players initially shared the lead. However, by the end of the first round, So had reclaimed his position at the top. Despite a shaky performance on Day 2, where he lost to Caruana, So bounced back with two wins against Javokhir Sindarov and Alireza Firouzja, before settling for a draw against reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen.

“I feel like my play was a bit better today,” So remarked after his matches. His victory against Sindarov was particularly noteworthy, as he demonstrated his deep understanding of classical chess, recalling that his first 21 moves mirrored those of the legendary Anatoly Karpov.

Niemann, on the other hand, had a stellar day, drawing with Fedoseev and then securing two wins against Caruana and Firouzja. “Performing this well in the Grand Chess Tour so far is a great sign for my future as a chess player,” he said, reflecting on his impressive performance.

Gukesh’s Emotional Victory

Among the highlights of the day was Gukesh Dommaraju’s emotional win over Sindarov, which he celebrated with a fist pump after the match. “In the heat of the moment, I did something,” he admitted, showcasing the passion that drives these top competitors.

Despite his earlier struggles, Gukesh’s victory against Sindarov marked a turning point, allowing him to share the spotlight with the tournament leaders. Meanwhile, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave finally scored his first win but remains four points behind the leaders.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament progresses, the excitement is palpable. Day three will feature rapid rounds 7-9, starting Thursday, May 7, at 8 a.m. ET. The marquee matchup will see Niemann face So directly, a clash that could significantly impact the standings.

With the tournament still wide open, fans can expect thrilling chess action as these grandmasters battle it out in the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The event can be followed live on the Saint Louis Chess Club’s YouTube channel and the official events page.

As the players prepare for the next rounds, one thing is clear: the race for the title is heating up, and every move counts in this high-stakes chess showdown.
