Kateryna Lagno and Alice Lee Advance to Quarterfinals of 2026 Women’s Speed Chess Championship

July 8, 2026 – In a thrilling Round of 16 showdown on Wednesday, Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno and International Master Alice Lee secured their spots in the Quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Speed Chess Championship, showcasing their exceptional skills and resilience.

Lagno’s match against IM Karina Ambartsumova was a masterclass in dominance, as she cruised to a decisive 10.5-3.5 victory. The three-time women’s blitz world champion started strong, winning all five games in the blitz segment and maintaining her momentum throughout the match. Despite a few close calls, Lagno’s strategic prowess shone through, earning her a prize of $2,625.

In stark contrast, Lee’s battle against former women’s world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk was a nail-biter. After a tense series of games, Lee emerged victorious, narrowly edging out Kosteniuk 9-7 after tiebreaks. Lee’s performance earned her $2,343.75, while Kosteniuk took home $656.25.

The upcoming Quarterfinal matches are set for Friday, July 10, featuring GM Divya Deshmukh against IM Rose Atwell at 10 a.m. ET, followed by GM Bibisara Assaubayeva facing Afruza Khamdamova at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Lagno vs. Ambartsumova: A Display of Dominance

Lagno’s victory was characterized by her flawless execution, particularly in the blitz segment where she won all five games. Ambartsumova had a fleeting opportunity in the first game, missing a critical tactical chance that could have shifted the match’s momentum. Lagno’s Alapin Sicilian opening proved effective, allowing her to suffocate Ambartsumova’s pieces and secure a commanding lead.

Even in the 3+1 segment, where Ambartsumova managed to create winning positions, she faltered under pressure, allowing Lagno to capitalize and extend her lead. The final segment saw Lagno maintain her composure, ultimately sealing her advancement to the next round.

Lee vs. Kosteniuk: A Battle of Wits

Lee’s match against Kosteniuk was a rollercoaster of emotions. After falling behind in the initial segment, Lee rallied in the 3+1 segment, showcasing her tactical acumen. The bullet segment proved pivotal, as Lee evened the score and forced tiebreaks.

In the tiebreaks, Lee’s experience shone through. She won both games with the white pieces and secured a draw with black, demonstrating her ability to perform under pressure. Reflecting on her comeback, Lee noted, “Even though the first two games were obviously not great, I was able to draw the third game, which helped me regain my focus.”

Looking Ahead

As the championship progresses, all eyes will be on the Quarterfinals, where Lagno and Lee will face formidable opponents. Lee is set to take on reigning World Champion Ju Wenjun, a rematch from their previous encounter in 2024, which Lee lost. “I think this will be a difficult match,” she acknowledged, “but I’m ready to adjust my mentality and focus on improving.”

The 2026 Women’s Speed Chess Championship, running from July 6-31, features a $75,000 prize fund and showcases some of the strongest female chess players in the world. With the stakes higher than ever, fans can expect more thrilling matches as the tournament unfolds.
