Zhu Jiner Set to Make Debut at Norway Chess Women 2026

NEW DELHI: Chinese Grandmaster Zhu Jiner is gearing up for her first appearance at the prestigious Norway Chess Women 2026, expressing her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. “I’m very happy and honoured to be playing Norway Chess Women for the first time. It’s a tournament I’ve followed for many years, and I really like the format. I’m excited to take on this challenge and give my very best in Oslo!” she stated.

Zhu’s rise in the chess world has been meteoric. Starting 2025 ranked World No. 10, she has impressively climbed to World No. 2 by October, a position she maintains today. Her remarkable performance has solidified her status as one of the top contenders in the Women’s World Championship cycle.

One of her standout achievements came during the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix Series 2024-2025, where she tied for first place in all three events she participated in, ultimately winning the overall series. This success has secured her a coveted spot in the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, where she will vie for the chance to challenge for the world title.

Zhu is celebrated for her balanced playing style, adept in both tactical skirmishes and long-term strategic battles. Her versatility allows her to execute sharp attacks while also navigating slow, methodical games.

Having first competed in the Norway Chess Open last year in Stavanger, Zhu is eager to return to Norway, this time to face off against the world’s elite female players, including reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun.

Benedicte Westre Skog from Norway Chess remarked, “Zhu Jiner has taken remarkable steps forward in a short time and is now firmly among the world’s best players. She’s an exciting player to watch, and we hope fans in China, especially those following Norway Chess on Weibo, will enjoy seeing her compete in Oslo.”

Launched in 2024, Norway Chess Women has quickly become one of the most significant tournaments in women’s chess, running concurrently with the main Norway Chess event and featuring the same format and prizes. Norway Chess 2026 is set to take place from May 25 to June 5 in Oslo, promising thrilling matches and fierce competition.

As Zhu prepares for this landmark event, the chess community eagerly anticipates her performance, hoping she will continue her impressive trajectory in the world of chess.
