In a thrilling display of resilience and skill, young chess prodigy Tamizh Amudhan pulled off a remarkable comeback against German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer during the inaugural round of Freestyle Friday. The match, which showcased the unpredictable nature of chess, ended with Tamizh emerging victorious despite facing a dire position early on.
Tamizh’s journey in the game is a testament to his dedication and talent. The match began with a randomly selected position from the 960 possible setups in Freestyle Chess, and Tamizh found himself playing with the black pieces against Keymer. Early on, it seemed that Keymer was poised for victory. After Tamizh played 9…Ne8, Keymer had a golden opportunity to secure a win with 10.Bxh7, a classic Greek Gift sacrifice. However, in a surprising turn of events, Keymer opted to castle instead, inadvertently granting Tamizh a lifeline.
With only 57 seconds left on his clock, Keymer’s hasty decision proved disastrous. Tamizh seized the moment, launching a brilliant counterattack that began with 22…Nh4, followed by 23…Rg6, leading to a decisive exchange in his favor. The game culminated in a stylish finish as Tamizh played 44…a5!, prompting Keymer to resign.
The moment was captured beautifully by Tamizh’s father, Sathish, who snapped a photo of his son sitting on the floor with his laptop propped on a pillow, a candle flickering nearby. The image encapsulates the dedication and passion that Tamizh brings to the game, with the candle serving as a metaphor for the bright future that lies ahead for this young talent.
A Bright Future Ahead
Tamizh’s journey in chess began at the tender age of four, inspired by his cousins. His natural aptitude for the game quickly became evident, and his parents have made significant sacrifices to support his training. While his mother stays with him in Thiruthangal, nearly 350 kilometers away from their home, his father remains with his sister, ensuring that Tamizh has the resources and environment needed to thrive.
The Hatsun Chess Academy, located just 70 kilometers from Madurai airport, has played a pivotal role in Tamizh’s development. Supported by Hatsun Agro Products Pvt. Ltd., the academy is dedicated to nurturing young chess talents under the guidance of Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna. In a significant boost to Tamizh’s career, the academy has fully sponsored him, further solidifying its commitment to fostering the next generation of chess champions in India.
