Arjun Erigaisi: Fischer Random is the Future of Chess
Chess Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi believes that Fischer Random is the future of chess, despite the ongoing power struggles between Fide and the Magnus Carlsen-backed Freestyle Chess Tour. In an interview with HT, the Indian world No.4 expressed his excitement about the different kinds of tournaments in the chess world, including the upcoming Freestyle Tour events.
Fischer Random, a format where the starting positions of pieces are randomised, minimises the role of opening theory in chess. Arjun sees this format as the future of the game, especially for the next generation of players.
While there have been clashes between Fide and Freestyle Chess over the World Championship title, Arjun remains focused on his goal of qualifying for the Candidates this year. He plans to participate in the Esports World Cup in Riyadh in July, where chess will be featured for the first time as an eSport.
Despite the competitive nature of chess, Arjun values his friendship with fellow player R Praggnanandhaa, whom he helped secure a major title earlier this year. The bond between the two players has only deepened over time, with Arjun appreciating Pragg’s friendship both on and off the board.
As Arjun continues to strive for success in the chess world, he remains optimistic about his chances of qualifying for the Candidates and making a mark in the upcoming tournaments. With his focus on selective participation and continuous improvement, Arjun is poised to make a significant impact in the world of chess.
