Former AICF Chief Sanjay Kapoor Unanimously Elected President of FIDE India Zone
Former All India Chess Federation (AICF) chief Sanjay Kapoor has been unanimously elected as the president of FIDE India Zone, the sport’s apex body in the country announced on Thursday. The decision was made during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of AICF in Ahmedabad.
Kapoor, who will serve as the zone president for four years, received congratulations from FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich on his new role. This appointment marks a significant moment for chess governance in India, as Kapoor is now entrusted with overseeing the game’s growth and development globally.
Expressing his gratitude, Kapoor stated, “It is an immense honor to be elected as the FIDE India Zone President. I am committed to the growth of chess in every corner of our country and ensuring that we produce Grandmasters from each and every state.” He also highlighted his excitement to work towards a bright future for chess in India and internationally, drawing from his experience with the successful staging of the 44th Chess Olympiad in India.
In other chess news, on International Chess Day (July 20), FIDE launched a Guinness World Record attempt for the most games played online and over-the-board in 24 hours. With over 109 national federations and major online chess platforms participating in almost 350 events globally, the initiative aimed to bring the chess community together in a unique way.
Additionally, FIDE officials, including Dvorkovich, and former world champions like Viswanathan Anand, Zhu Chen, and Alexandra Kosteniuk, gathered in Paris to celebrate 100 years since the founding of FIDE. The central ceremony brought together renowned players and chess officials from France and around the world.
