D Gukesh Prepares for World Championship Defense Against Javokhir Sindarov
NEW DELHI: World chess champion D Gukesh is gearing up to defend his title against Uzbekistan’s rising star, Javokhir Sindarov, later this year. As the young Indian prodigy readies himself for this high-stakes match, Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran has offered crucial insights on areas where Gukesh can enhance his game.
Sasikiran, a seasoned player and former second to five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, highlighted Gukesh’s penchant for creating complex positions. While this strategy can be a double-edged sword, it often leads to time pressure during critical moments of the game. “Sometimes Gukesh takes too much risk with his unconventional play, creating chaos and imbalance,” Sasikiran explained. “He thrives in such situations, but it can also lead to time trouble.”
To counter this, Sasikiran advises Gukesh to focus on accelerating his calculations. “You don’t want to consistently find yourself in a scenario where your opponent is driving you into time trouble,” he cautioned.
Despite mixed results in recent classical tournaments, Gukesh’s championship experience could be a significant advantage. Sasikiran emphasized the importance of strong preparation and memorization at the highest level of chess. He noted that Sindarov, who has shown remarkable skill in previous tournaments, is well-prepared and relies heavily on quick, tactical play.
“Sindarov has made deep preparations for the Candidates tournament, showcasing a very high level of chess,” Sasikiran remarked. “This world championship match is going to be very tough.”
In addition to improving his speed, Sasikiran urged Gukesh to focus on putting his opponents in uncomfortable positions and to study Sindarov’s weaknesses closely. He warned that the challenger is not only well-prepared but also carries significant momentum into the match.
As the championship date approaches, Sasikiran believes Gukesh and his team are already narrowing down their opening strategies, ensuring they are ready for every possible scenario. “Match experience is in Gukesh’s favor, but he must remain vigilant,” he concluded.
With the chess world eagerly anticipating this clash of titans, all eyes will be on Gukesh as he seeks to defend his title against a formidable opponent.
