D Gukesh Prepares for World Championship Defense Against Javokhir Sindarov: Insights from Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran

D. Gukesh Prepares for World Championship Defense Against Javokhir Sindarov

NEW DELHI: As the chess world eagerly anticipates the upcoming World Championship match, reigning champion D. Gukesh is gearing up to defend his title against Uzbekistan’s rising star, Javokhir Sindarov. With the match set for later this year, Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran has shared insights on what Gukesh needs to focus on to maintain his edge.

Sasikiran, a seasoned player and former second to five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, highlighted Gukesh’s unique playing style, which often leads to highly complicated positions. While this approach can be a double-edged sword, it has occasionally resulted in time pressure for the young Indian prodigy. “Sometimes Gukesh takes too much risk with his unconventional play, creating chaos and imbalance,” Sasikiran told PTI. “He thrives in that kind of game, but it often puts him in time trouble.”

To counteract this, Sasikiran advises Gukesh to enhance his calculation speed. “You don’t want to consistently find yourself in a scenario where your opponent is driving you into time trouble,” he cautioned.

Gukesh’s journey since winning the world title has been a mixed bag, with struggles in several major classical tournaments. Sasikiran emphasized the importance of strong preparation and memorization at the highest level, urging Gukesh to focus on putting his opponents in uncomfortable situations. He also stressed the need for Gukesh to study Sindarov’s weaknesses closely, as the challenger is known for his meticulous preparation and rapid play.

“Sindarov has shown he can create complications and has prepared deeply for the Candidates tournament,” Sasikiran noted. “This World Championship match is going to be very tough.”

While Gukesh must work on converting technical positions and avoiding missed opportunities, Sasikiran believes the young champion’s previous experience in a World Championship match could be a significant advantage. “Gukesh has already been at that level, so match experience is in his favor, but the challenger also carries momentum,” he added.

As the countdown to the championship begins, Sasikiran is confident that Gukesh and his team are diligently narrowing down their opening choices and will continue their preparations right up to the match. The chess community is buzzing with excitement, eager to see how Gukesh will adapt and defend his title against a formidable opponent.
