Saint Louis, MO — In a thrilling showdown at the Saint Louis Chess Club (SLCC) earlier this afternoon, Grandmaster Vladimir Akopian emerged victorious against Grandmaster Alexander Onischuk, securing a 3–1 win in the U.S. Senior Championship playoff. This triumph marks Akopian’s second title in three years, solidifying his status as a formidable force in senior chess.
Akopian, who led the tournament for the majority of its duration, faced a fierce challenge from Onischuk, who rallied with an impressive finish of 3½ out of 4 in the final rounds. The playoff began with two rapid games, where the players split the points, setting the stage for a dramatic blitz showdown.
In the first rapid game, Akopian showcased his preparation with a slightly slow variation of the Slav Defense. Despite drifting into complications, he managed to create enough counterplay to turn the tide in his favor, landing a decisive blow that put him ahead.
Onischuk, needing a win to stay in contention, responded with vigor in the second rapid game. He navigated an imbalanced position expertly, seizing the initiative and ultimately leveling the score.
The blitz games proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. In the first blitz match, Akopian appeared to have the upper hand, only to falter in a mutual time scramble. A tactical oversight allowed Onischuk to equalize and then seize the initiative, but a sudden blunder from Onischuk gifted Akopian the win.
With the pressure mounting, Onischuk entered the second blitz game with the white pieces, needing a victory to force a third match. Akopian opted for the Nimzo Indian Defense, a solid choice that initially neutralized Onischuk’s aggressive play. However, a couple of impatient moves from Akopian shifted the advantage back to Onischuk. Just when it seemed a third playoff match was imminent, Akopian made a bold move, pushing his f-pawn decisively.
