Alpine Sg Pipers Secure Victory Over PBG Alaskan Knights in Tech Mahindra Global Chess League

The Alpine Sg Pipers made headlines on Monday as they became the first team to defeat the PBG Alaskan Knights at the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League in London. This victory puts the Pipers just three points behind the league leaders, alongside the Triveni Continental Kings. The Ganges Grandmasters also secured their second match victory, keeping them in contention, while the upGrad Mumba Masters are facing a tough road ahead.

In a thrilling match on day five, the Triveni Continental Kings narrowly defeated the upGrad Mumba Masters with a score of 10-8. It was a special birthday gift for team captain GM Loek van Wely, who celebrated his 52nd birthday with a victory. However, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave faced another defeat against GM Alireza Firouzja, who showcased nerves of steel in their match.

The Alpine Sg Pipers also emerged victorious with a 9-7 win over the PBG Alaskan Knights. Coach GM Praveen Thipsay’s strategic words proved prophetic as the Pipers avenged their previous loss. The match was decided on the women’s boards, with GMs Hou Yifan and Kateryna Lagno delivering strong performances for the Pipers.

In the final match of the day, the Ganges Grandmasters secured a convincing 10-4 win over the American Gambits. GM Volodar Murzin was the standout player, showcasing his tactical prowess with a brilliant victory. IM Nurgul Salimova also played a crucial role in sealing the deal for the Grandmasters.
