Triveni Continental Kings Defeat upGrad Mumba Masters in Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Opening Match

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League saw an intense battle between the Triveni Continental Kings and upGrad Mumba Masters, with the reigning champions securing a 10-8 victory in the opening match on day five.

Alireza Firouzja continued his impressive winning streak, securing his fifth consecutive victory in the tournament. The Continental Kings entered the match in second place with three wins out of five, while the Mumba Masters were struggling with one win and four losses, placing them near the bottom of the standings.

The rematch stage began with all teams facing each other once before. In their first contest, the Continental Kings defeated Mumba 12-3 with wins by Firouzja, Wei Yi, and Valentina Gunina. This time, Mumba had the advantage of making the first move.

Firouzja once again proved his dominance by defeating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with a powerful attacking combination, keeping him undefeated after six rounds. Vidit Gujrathi also secured a win for Mumba by capitalizing on a critical mistake by Wei Yi.

Despite Alexandra Kosteniuk extending the Continental Kings’ lead by defeating Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli brought Mumba back into the match by defeating Gunina. With the Continental Kings leading 9-7, the match came down to the youngsters’ board.

Javokhir Sindarov of the Continental Kings missed two winning chances, and Raunak Sadhwani of Mumba opted for a draw by repeating moves, sealing the Continental Kings’ 10-8 victory.

“This is one of the best performances I’ve ever had, but there are still a few rounds left,” Firouzja said after the match, acknowledging that his team was fortunate to come out on top. The competition in the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League continues to heat up as the teams battle for the top spot.
