Caruana and So Advance to Championship Bracket Final at American Cup

In a thrilling showdown at the American Cup, top seeds Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So have secured their spots in the Championship Bracket final, each winning their semifinal matches with a score of 2½–1½. Caruana triumphed over Awonder Liang, while So outplayed Sam Sevian, setting the stage for an exciting clash between two of chess’s elite.

Caruana, who previously claimed the inaugural American Cup title in 2022, is looking to add another trophy to his collection. Meanwhile, So, a two-time runner-up in 2023 and 2024, is eager to finally capture the coveted title in this double-elimination event.

The upcoming final will not only determine who advances directly to the Grand Final but also who will await the victor from the Elimination Bracket. Despite their losses, Sevian and Liang remain in contention for the overall title, dropping to the Elimination Bracket where they will face Levon Aronian and Leinier Dominguez, respectively, in crucial two-game rapid matches on Saturday.

The match between So and Sevian was particularly intense, culminating in a blitz playoff after the classical games ended in draws. So demonstrated his prowess with the white pieces, gradually outmaneuvering Sevian in a Giuoco Piano. However, the second blitz game saw a pivotal moment when So blundered with 23…Rg6??. Sevian had a golden opportunity to seize the advantage but faltered with 24.Kf2?, allowing So to regain control and ultimately secure his place in the final.

Women’s Section: Yip and Lee Set for Final Showdown

In the women’s section, the finalists are Carissa Yip and defending champion Alice Lee, who both showcased their skills in decisive victories. Yip, the top seed and four-time US women’s champion, overcame Tatev Abrahamyan, while Lee bested Zoey Tang in a match that ended swiftly due to a tactical blunder by Tang.

Lee’s victory was marked by a critical moment on move 19, where Tang’s 19…Qd7?? allowed Lee to execute a brilliant sequence with 20.Nc6! bxc6 21.dxc6, leading to a dominant position that she converted with ease.

As Yip and Lee prepare for their final, Abrahamyan and Tang will look to bounce back in the Elimination Bracket, facing Rachel Li and Anna Sargsyan, respectively, in must-win matches to stay in the tournament.

Looking Ahead

With the Championship Bracket final set between Caruana and So, and the women’s final featuring Yip and Lee, the American Cup promises to deliver more high-stakes chess action. Fans eagerly await the outcomes, as the tournament continues to showcase the best of competitive chess.
