Chess Enthusiasts Gear Up for World Schools Team Championship 2026 in Costa Rica
San Jose, Costa Rica – The International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the International School Chess Federation (ISCF) are thrilled to announce the upcoming American Stage of the World Schools Team Championship 2026, set to take place in the vibrant city of San Jose, Costa Rica, from August 11 to 16, 2026. This prestigious event invites all FIDE member federations from the American zone and eligible players to showcase their skills on an international platform.
The championship will be hosted at the luxurious DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cariari, providing a perfect backdrop for this exciting competition. Participants can expect an intense eight-round tournament, employing a time control of Game/45 minutes with a 10-second increment, ensuring a thrilling experience for both players and spectators alike.
Tournament Details
The full schedule for all rounds is available here. Each team must consist of players born between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018, and must include at least one boy and one girl, promoting inclusivity in the sport.
However, teams must adhere to specific regulations: chess academies, clubs, and schools that combine players from multiple institutions are not eligible to participate. This ensures that the competition remains fair and representative of individual schools.
Registration Deadline Approaches
Interested teams are urged to act quickly, as the registration deadline is set for July 3, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CDT. Only one team will be selected to represent the USA, based on selection criteria that include the 2026 National High School Team Champion, National Middle School Team Champion, or the highest average June 2026 FIDE Regular rating among players #1-4.
To apply, teams must submit an application form along with players’ school report cards to Brian Yang at US Chess. A non-refundable administration fee of $400 will be required upon selection, covering the costs associated with the application process.
Travel and Accommodation
All participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, as no minor may travel alone. Additional expenses, including travel and accommodation, will be the responsibility of the applicant. For detailed accommodation information, please refer to Article 6 of the official invitation.
Health and Safety
As the event approaches, US Chess emphasizes the importance of health and safety. Participants must agree to a waiver regarding international travel risks, ensuring that all players are aware of the potential challenges associated with traveling abroad.
