Aravindh Chithambaram Bounces Back at Prague International Chess Festival

Prague, Czech Republic – Defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram showcased his resilience at the Prague International Chess Festival, recovering from a first-round setback to secure a thrilling victory over American player Hans Moke Niemann. The match took a dramatic turn when Niemann, who had been in a favorable position, ran out of time at a crucial moment, allowing Chithambaram to capitalize and transition into a winning endgame.

Chithambaram, who suffered a disappointing loss to Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the opening round, displayed a renewed vigor as he adopted the Philidor Defence against Niemann. The American initially seized the initiative with the white pieces, but his time management proved costly, shifting the momentum in favor of the Chennai-based player.

Meanwhile, World Champion D Gukesh faced a challenging match against Nodirbek Yakubboev, resulting in his second consecutive draw. Gukesh, playing with the white pieces, struggled to gain an advantage in the Queen’s Gambit Declined. After a series of trades, Yakubboev executed a bold rook sacrifice to force a repetition of position, leaving both players with a share of the points.

In another notable match, Spaniard David Anton Guijarro triumphed over Dutch player Jorden van Foreest, marking the only other decisive game of the day. With seven rounds remaining, Abdusattorov, Yakubboev, and local favorite David Navara emerged as co-leaders with 1.5 points each, closely followed by Gukesh, Chithambaram, van Foreest, and Guijarro, all just half a point behind.

In the challengers section, Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh, the reigning Women’s World Cup champion, managed a draw against Daniil Yuffa of Spain, maintaining a balanced score after two games. This follows her earlier draw with Hungary’s Benjamin Gledura, as she aims for a chance to compete in the upcoming Women’s Candidates Tournament.

As the tournament progresses, the excitement continues to build, with players vying for supremacy in this prestigious event. Fans and chess enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating the next rounds, where every move could prove pivotal in the quest for victory.
