The year 2024 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Indian chess, with unprecedented achievements and victories that have put the country on the global chess map like never before. From young prodigies Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi stunning the world by defeating Magnus Carlsen, to Gukesh’s historic win at the Candidates Tournament and the Indian teams clinching gold at the Chess Olympiads, it has been a year to remember.

As the year draws to a close, all eyes are now on the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New York, USA. With over 300 players set to compete, the stage is set for an intense battle of wits and strategy. While world champion Gukesh has withdrawn from the tournament, India’s hopes now rest on the shoulders of Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi, who are gearing up to showcase their skills on the global stage.

In the women’s section, India boasts a formidable line-up of players including Harika Dronavalli, Koneru Humpy, and Vaishali among others. The challenge at the Championships is expected to be fierce, with the shorter formats of chess demanding quick thinking and sharp intuition.

The World Rapid and Blitz Championships will feature a total prize fund of nearly $1.5 million, with players competing in rapid and blitz formats over five days.
