Arjun Erigaisi Reclaims Spot in Top-10 After Victory in Sweden
Malmö, Sweden – Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has made a significant leap in the world of chess, re-entering the top-10 of the Classical live ratings following his impressive third-round victory over Swedish Grandmaster Nils Grandelius at the TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament. With this win, Arjun now ranks No. 9 on 2700Chess.com, marking a triumphant return for Indian chess on the global stage.
The 22-year-old prodigy showcased his skills on Sunday, defeating Grandelius in just 42 moves while playing with the white pieces. This victory not only earned him crucial points but also allowed him to surpass renowned players like Wesley So from the USA and China’s Wei Yi in the live ratings.
Arjun’s win was one of only two decisive results in the third round, with Turkish GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus also claiming victory against Chinese GM Zhu Jiner. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated match between world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and world No. 4 Nodirbek Abdusattorov ended in a draw, as did the game between Dutch GM Jorden van Foreest and American GM Andy Woodward.
Joint Lead in TePe Sigeman & Co Chess
With this victory, Arjun has not only climbed the ratings but has also moved into a joint lead in the tournament, currently sitting on 2 points alongside four others, including the legendary Carlsen. This tournament marks a rare appearance for Carlsen in a Classical format outside of his home event, Norway Chess, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.
As the tournament progresses, Arjun is poised to challenge Carlsen and other top players for the coveted top spot, with four rounds remaining until the conclusion on Thursday.
A Rising Star in Multiple Formats
Arjun’s prowess extends beyond Classical chess; he is also the only Indian player ranked among the top-10 in rapid and blitz formats. He currently holds the fourth position in the FIDE rapid ratings and seventh in blitz. His remarkable performance at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Abu Dhabi last December, where he secured bronze medals in both formats, further solidifies his status as a rising star in the chess world.
While India recently boasted three players in the top-10, including reigning world champion D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa, both have faced challenges, slipping to 18th and 16th respectively in the FIDE ratings after a series of underwhelming performances.
As Arjun Erigaisi continues to shine on the international stage, chess enthusiasts around the world will be eagerly watching his journey in Malmö and beyond.
