Arjun Erigaisi Awaits Confirmation as Norway Chess 2026 Lineup Takes Shape

NEW DELHI: The chess world is abuzz with excitement as Norway Chess announces the participation of Alireza Firouzja for its 2026 edition in Oslo. However, India’s top-ranked player, Arjun Erigaisi, remains unconfirmed for the prestigious tournament, leaving fans eager for updates.

Firouzja, renowned for his aggressive and dynamic playing style, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, stating, “I’m looking forward to competing against the best chess players in the world at Norway Chess 2026 in Oslo.” His impressive track record includes becoming a grandmaster at just 14 and achieving the remarkable feat of being the youngest player to reach a 2800 rating. With two appearances in the FIDE Candidates Tournament under his belt, Firouzja is no stranger to high-stakes competition.

Having participated in Norway Chess four times, Firouzja’s previous performances include a commendable second-place finish in both 2020 and 2021. Tournament COO Benedicte Westre Skog praised his return, saying, “Alireza Firouzja has been part of Norway Chess for several years and has consistently delivered performances at the very highest level. We’re very pleased to welcome him back to Oslo in 2026.”

While Erigaisi’s status remains uncertain, India will still be well represented at the event. World champion Gukesh Dommaraju and rising star R Praggnanandhaa have already secured their spots, alongside chess legends Magnus Carlsen and Vincent Keymer. With one more player to be announced each week, there is still hope for Erigaisi to join this elite lineup.

Gukesh, who made history as the youngest undisputed world champion after defeating Ding Liren in 2024, expressed his excitement about returning to Norway Chess. “I am really happy to take part in Norway Chess again, fighting against a very strong field as always, and looking forward to all the exciting games,” he said. His previous success at the tournament, including a memorable victory over Carlsen in 2025, adds to the anticipation surrounding his participation.

As the chess community eagerly awaits further announcements, all eyes are on Arjun Erigaisi, hoping to see him join the ranks of the world’s best in Oslo. The countdown to Norway Chess 2026 has officially begun, and the stage is set for thrilling matches and unforgettable moments.
