Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi Emerges as Co-Leader at World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship
Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has emerged as one of the four co-leaders at the World rapid and blitz chess championship after a stellar performance on the second day of the tournament. Erigaisi, along with Russians Volodar Murzin and Alexander Grischuk, as well as Duda Jan-Kryzstof of Poland, share the lead with seven points each.
The day was not without controversy, as five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen was fined and disqualified for wearing jeans, which are prohibited under tournament regulations. Carlsen’s disqualification has boosted Erigaisi’s chances in the championship, as the Norwegian is known for his dominance in faster versions of the game.
In the women’s section, Indian player Koneru Humpy has put aside an early loss to lead with 6.5 points, alongside compatriot D Harika and Wenjun Ju of China. Humpy’s impressive performance has put her in a strong position heading into the final rounds of the championship.
Erigaisi’s victories over Robson Ray of the United States and Shant Sargsyan of Armenia have solidified his position at the top of the standings. With just four rounds remaining, Erigaisi will face off against Grischuk in the upcoming round, further testing his skills against top competition.
As the championship progresses, all eyes will be on Erigaisi and Humpy as they aim to secure podium finishes in their respective categories. With stiff competition from top players around the world, the Indian contingent is poised to make a mark on the international chess scene.
