World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen Quits World Rapid Chess Championship Over Dress Code Dispute

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen made headlines when he quit the World Rapid Chess Championship after refusing to change out of his jeans, according to the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Carlsen, who has a long list of titles to his name, also withdrew from the World Blitz Championship following the incident.

FIDE stated that Carlsen breached the tournament’s dress code by wearing jeans and declined to change when asked by the Chief Arbiter, resulting in a $200 fine. Despite the possibility of returning for the rest of the tournament, Carlsen decided to walk away, citing the incident as a matter of principle.

The chess champion explained that he had been at a lunch meeting before the tournament’s second day and didn’t have time to change out of his jeans. He expressed frustration with FIDE, accusing the organization of targeting players not to sign with a tournament he promotes.

FIDE’s CEO Emil Sutovsky responded to Carlsen’s claims, calling them a “lie” and emphasizing FIDE’s role as the governing body of chess. The incident has sparked debate within the chess community, highlighting the importance of following tournament rules and regulations.
