Explosive Tactics Await in the Upcoming Chess.com Atomic Chess Championship

Get ready to ignite your chess skills as the highly anticipated Chess.com Atomic Chess Championship is set to launch on March 4. With a thrilling $2,500 prize fund at stake, this event promises to deliver explosive gameplay and intense competition.

Atomic Chess, a captivating variant of the classic game, introduces a unique twist: each capture triggers an explosion that affects all surrounding squares—except for pawns. This means that every move could lead to devastating consequences, transforming the chessboard into a battlefield of fiery tactics and unexpected swindles.

The championship kicks off with qualifiers spanning two days, March 4 and 5, thanks to enthusiastic feedback from the Chess.com community. Players will engage in 75-minute arenas with a 3+0 time control, and participation is open to all Chess.com members. To join, simply check the qualifier schedule and hit the Join button within an hour of the event’s start.

While players are encouraged to embrace the explosive nature of Atomic Chess, Chess.com is committed to maintaining a fair playing environment. Participants may be required to join a video call during qualifiers, setting up two cameras from different angles to ensure compliance. Those who refuse will be removed from the event.

The excitement culminates on March 6 at 1 p.m. ET / 19:00 CET / 11:30 p.m. IST, when the winners of the qualifiers will face off in a double-elimination knockout final.

Last year’s champion, Liam Hereford, made history as the first non-titled player to claim the title, overcoming a first-match loss to NM Eduardo Lorenzon in a dramatic Grand Final Reset. With only one other non-titled player achieving a similar feat, the question remains: can another underdog rise to the occasion this year?

Join the action on March 4 and 5, and test your skills in this fiery chess variant. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, the Chess.com Atomic Chess Championship promises to be an unforgettable experience. Don’t miss your chance to make history on the chessboard!
