Babu Owino: The Rising Challenger in Nairobi’s Gubernatorial Race

Babu Owino Sets the Stage for a Fierce Gubernatorial Showdown Against Johnson Sakaja

Nairobi, Kenya – The political landscape in Nairobi is heating up as firebrand legislator Babu Owino gears up for a titanic battle against incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja in the upcoming 2027 elections. With a strategy that blends grassroots outreach and strategic alliances, Owino is positioning himself as a formidable challenger to Sakaja, who currently enjoys backing from both the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions.

Owino, the MP for Embakasi East, has been quick to capitalize on growing discontent with Sakaja’s administration, which has faced incessant calls for impeachment from loyalists of Raila Odinga and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The recent intervention by President William Ruto and Odinga himself, aimed at quelling the impeachment efforts led by vocal MCAs like Robert Alai, underscores the precarious position Sakaja finds himself in.

Amidst this political turmoil, Owino has emerged as a beacon of hope for Nairobi residents, promising to dismantle the alleged cartels that have taken root at City Hall. “Your staff will only act the way they think you want the county to be run. If they know you are corrupt, they will follow suit. If they know you are a straightforward leader, they will also take cue,” he stated, outlining his vision for a transparent and accountable administration.

The MP has identified key issues plaguing Nairobi, including poor drainage, inadequate road infrastructure, and garbage management, pledging to address these challenges head-on. “A simple solution like devolving garbage collection to youth and women’s groups can suffice, and you won’t even see a leaf in this city,” he asserted, showcasing his commitment to innovative solutions.

As part of his electoral strategy, Owino has been forging alliances, notably with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka. His endorsement of Kalonzo’s presidential bid during a recent student leaders’ forum signals a concerted effort to broaden his support base, particularly among the Kamba community, which is crucial for electoral success in Nairobi.

Owino is also making inroads into Mt. Kenya, having recently met with the Kikuyu Council of Elders, who expressed their support for his gubernatorial ambitions. This outreach is seen as a strategic move to consolidate votes from diverse communities across the city.

His credentials as a legislator bolster his campaign, with recent Infotrak rankings naming him the best-performing MP in Kenya, boasting an impressive approval rating of 72%. This recognition provides a stark contrast to Sakaja’s troubled administration, which has been marred by allegations of corruption and governance failures.

Critics argue that while Owino’s grassroots support and performance credentials are strong, the question remains whether he can secure victory without the backing of ODM leader Raila Odinga. Political analysts note that previous successes in Nairobi have often required a coalition-building approach that transcends traditional party lines.

Sakaja, for his part, defends his record, citing initiatives like the Dishi na County program, which provides meals for primary school children, and efforts to beautify the city. He remains optimistic about his chances, asserting, “I still have more to offer.”

As the political landscape continues to evolve, observers are keenly watching how the dynamics will play out. Owino’s outreach across ethnic divides, coupled with his sharp critique of Sakaja’s administration, has created a political challenge that leaves national leaders uncertain about how to respond.

In a city as cosmopolitan as Nairobi, the coalition mathematics for victory is complex. Analysts suggest that Owino must appeal to a broad spectrum of communities to secure a win, as relying solely on traditional support bases may not suffice.

As the race heats up, one thing is clear: Babu Owino has established himself as a serious contender in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, and his ambitions are not to be underestimated. The coming months will reveal whether he can translate his grassroots support and strategic alliances into electoral success, or if Sakaja will manage to rally his base and fend off the challenge.
