In a remarkable display of strategy and skill, the Berkeley Springs High School chess team clinched first place at the Area-Wide Scholastic Chess Tournament held on Saturday, April 25, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. This victory adds yet another accolade to their impressive record, following their recent West Virginia State Championship title and a strong performance at the National Championships in Chicago.
The tournament, which utilized a four-round Swiss-system format, attracted students from kindergarten through 12th grade, with 12 high schools competing in the championship section. The Berkeley Springs team showcased their prowess, with three players finishing in the top five, contributing crucial points to secure the team victory.
Senior Joseph Guzman-Robles led the charge with an undefeated second-place finish, amassing 3.5 out of 4 possible points. He was closely followed by junior Malcolm Johns and senior Brody Gloyd, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively, each scoring 3 out of 4. Together, this dynamic trio accumulated an impressive 9.5 out of a possible 12 points.
Sophomore Dylan Stewart also shone brightly, going undefeated with one win and three draws to secure seventh place overall. The team’s success was further bolstered by strong performances from Brian Ailor (13th), Moises Guzman-Robles (15th), and newcomers Bruce Hess (19th) and Cason Wingo (20th), all of whom played vital supporting roles.
During the awards ceremony, tournament organizer David Mehler delivered an inspiring message, reminding attendees that rankings and match results are only part of the chess experience. “What matters most,” he emphasized, “is what young players learn, the development of their thinking, their resilience, and the connections they build both intellectually and socially.”
For the Berkeley Springs students, this lesson may be the most valuable takeaway. Beyond the trophy now proudly displayed in the high school’s case, the team returns home enriched with growth, learning, and the joy that the timeless game of chess inspires.
As they celebrate this latest achievement, the Berkeley Springs chess team continues to exemplify the spirit of competition and camaraderie, proving that the true essence of scholastic chess extends far beyond the board.
