Exciting Wins for GMs Vaishali Rameshbabu and Abhimanyu Mishra at 2024 Biel Chess Festival

In a stunning turn of events at the 2024 Biel Chess Festival, GMs Vaishali Rameshbabu and Abhimanyu Mishra, the lowest-rated players in their groups, emerged victorious once again in round two. Mishra, after a long and grinding win against GM Sam Shankland, now leads the Masters, while Vaishali took down Challengers leader GM Alexander Donchenko in a tactical masterpiece.

The unexpected wins by these young players allowed GM Saleh Salem to take a slender lead by handing a second loss to top-seed GM Jonas Bjerre. Round three of the festival is set to start on Thursday, July 18, at 8 a.m. ET / 14:00 CEST / 5:30 p.m. IST.

Despite “only” three decisive games in round two, the draws featured heroic defense of seemingly hopeless positions. Mishra’s impressive performance has earned him a 2.5-point lead in the Masters, while Salem leads Vaishali due to his superior performance in rapid chess.

In the Masters, Mishra continued his winning streak, gaining 13.1 rating points in just two games. His victory against Shankland showcased his strategic prowess and determination. On the other hand, Vaishali’s brilliant tactical play against Donchenko has propelled her to the brink of the women’s top-10 rankings.

The Biel Chess Festival, running from July 13-26 in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, features over 20 individual events, with the main highlights being the Masters and Challengers GM Triathlons. The players compete in Rapid, Classical, and Blitz formats, with ties being settled by the standings of the Chess960 tournament.

The unexpected success of Vaishali and Mishra has added an exciting twist to the tournament, showcasing the talent and determination of these young chess prodigies. Stay tuned for more thrilling matches in the upcoming rounds of the Biel Chess Festival.
