The decisive victory came on July 4 during the finals of the 2026 India Rising tournament held in Mumbai, where Bok faced off against fellow Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, stretching to the maximum number of games allowed, with all three sets culminating in intense armageddon tiebreaks. In a dramatic finale, Bok emerged victorious, securing the win with White in the third and final armageddon game.

The highly anticipated Esports World Cup is set to take place in Paris on August 14 and 15, where Bok will join an elite roster of players from around the globe.

Bok took to social media to celebrate his achievement, tweeting, “Won India Rising and qualified for the Esports World Cup! 🏆 #EWC2026 #Chess #Esports” alongside a jubilant photo of himself.

A Journey Through the India Rising Tournament

The road to the finals was no easy feat. The qualifiers for India Rising kicked off on May 18, featuring five Open Qualifiers for non-titled players, followed by a Titled Qualifier on May 23. The top four players from each event advanced to the playoffs, culminating in an eight-player single-elimination bracket. Bok and Gujrathi emerged as the top two finishers, setting the stage for their epic clash.

The finals consisted of three sets, with the first two sets comprising four games each, while the third set was a best-of-two format. Each set was decided by armageddon tiebreaks, and the match showcased the incredible skill and resilience of both players.

Match Breakdown

Set 1: Bok took an early lead, winning the first set 3-2 after a dramatic comeback. Despite losing the first game, he rallied to win the last two games, showcasing his tactical prowess.

Set 2: Gujrathi fought back, winning the second set 3-2. He demonstrated exceptional skill, particularly in the armageddon tiebreak, where he capitalized on Bok’s missed opportunities.

Set 3: The final set was a nail-biter, with both players exchanging blows. After a tense back-and-forth, Bok managed to secure the win in the last armageddon game, despite feeling he was on the back foot.

Reflecting on his victory, Bok remarked, “I think I was very lucky in many games to win or escape with a draw. In that last game, I also felt like I was getting outplayed, but I was just trying to hang in there.”

A Bright Future Ahead

With his victory, Bok not only earned a spot in the Esports World Cup but also a prize of ₹10,00,000 (approximately $10,000). As he prepares for the international stage in Paris, the chess community eagerly anticipates his performance against some of the world’s best players.

The 2026 India Rising Final was a testament to the growing popularity of chess in the esports arena, drawing attention from fans and players alike. As the excitement builds for the Esports World Cup, all eyes will be on Benjamin Bok as he aims to make his mark on the global chess scene.
