Oleksandr Bortnyk Makes History with Ninth Freestyle Friday Win and Championship Triumph

GM Oleksandr Bortnyk Makes History with Ninth Freestyle Friday Win

June 5, 2026 — In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk has etched his name into the annals of chess history by becoming the first player to secure nine victories in the popular Freestyle Fridays tournament. His latest triumph also marks his third win in the ongoing Freestyle Friday Championship, solidifying his position at the top of the championship standings.

Bortnyk kicked off the tournament with an impressive 9/9 start, showcasing his prowess against some of the world’s best players. Despite a challenging finish of 0.5/2, he managed to maintain his lead, continuing his fierce competition with GM Pranav Venkatesh.

In a thrilling showdown, GM Maciej Klekowski claimed second place with a score of 8.5 points, defeating IM Yoseph Taher in the final round to secure his position through tiebreaks, leaving Taher in third.

The tournament saw three players, including Bortnyk, start strong with 4/4. Bortnyk’s fourth-round match against GM David Navara was particularly memorable, as he executed a brilliant combination of a rook fork and bishop pin to gain a decisive advantage.

However, not all was smooth sailing. In the fifth round, Quesada’s game began but he did not play, allowing Bortnyk to easily advance to 5/5. Meanwhile, Bluebaum faced a lackluster draw against GM Dmitry Andreikin, which ultimately cost him valuable points.

As the rounds progressed, Bortnyk continued to dominate, dispatching Taher in just 16 moves during the seventh round after his opponent made a critical blunder. With each victory, Bortnyk’s lead grew, and by the eighth round, he was on the verge of securing at least a tie for first place.

Bortnyk’s relentless pursuit of excellence culminated in a decisive win against GM Conrad Holt, bringing his score to an impressive 9/9. With only two rounds left, he was in a commanding position, needing just draws to guarantee a share of first place.

In the penultimate round, Bortnyk faced IM Renato Terry, a formidable opponent with a history of success in the tournament. However, Bortnyk’s skill shone through, and he quickly secured victory, leaving him on the brink of outright championship glory.

As the final round approached, Bortnyk faced GM Nodirbek Yakubboev, knowing that a win would clinch the tournament. In a display of tactical brilliance, he navigated the board with ease, ultimately making a draw that secured his first-place finish.

Bortnyk’s remarkable performance not only earned him the championship title but also a prize of $400. Klekowski and Taher followed closely behind, taking home $250 and $150, respectively. WIM Margarita Potapova also made headlines, finishing 11th overall with 7.5 points and winning the women’s prize.

Freestyle Friday continues to be a highlight in the chess calendar, attracting top-tier talent and providing a platform for innovative play. As Bortnyk celebrates his historic ninth victory, the chess community eagerly anticipates what the next tournament will bring.
