Broadway’s “Chess” to Conclude Early at Imperial Theatre

New York, NY – In a surprising turn of events, the revival of the iconic musical “Chess” will conclude its run at the Imperial Theatre on June 21, ending months earlier than initially scheduled. The production, which features a star-studded cast including Aaron Tveit, Nicholas Christopher, and Lea Michele, was originally set to continue through September 13.

The announcement also means that singer and actress Joanna “JoJo” Levesque will not take over the role of Florence Vassy as planned, following Michele’s departure on June 23.

By its final curtain, “Chess” will have completed 34 preview performances and 241 regular performances, a significant achievement compared to its original Broadway staging in 1988, which closed after just 68 performances.

In a joint statement, producers Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization expressed their pride in the production’s journey. “We are immensely proud of the extraordinary work this cast and creative team have done in reimagining ‘Chess’ for a new generation of theatregoers while honoring the passionate fans who have championed this musical for nearly four decades,” they said.

The producers highlighted the emotional connection forged with audiences, stating, “To see longtime fans and first-time audiences alike embrace this production so wholeheartedly has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.”

The revival has been praised for its powerful performances and the legendary score by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim Rice. “Witnessing Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele, and Nicholas Christopher perform this score alongside some of Broadway’s most remarkable talent is something that will stay with audiences long after they depart the Imperial Theatre,” the producers noted.

Reflecting on the significance of bringing “Chess” back to Broadway for the first time in nearly 40 years, they added, “It has been an enormous privilege, and we are extremely proud of everything this production accomplished during its historic Broadway run.”
