Hikaru Nakamura Dominates Bullet Brawl, Secures 60th Title

In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura reclaimed his throne in the chess world on Saturday, clinching victory in the latest edition of Bullet Brawl with an impressive score of 178 points. This triumph not only marked a significant comeback from his rare defeat last week but also celebrated a remarkable milestone—his 60th Bullet Brawl title.

Nakamura’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he finished a commanding 15 points ahead of fellow Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk, who secured second place with 163 points. The competition was fierce, with 175 titled participants vying for a share of the $1,000 prize pool. For his efforts, Nakamura took home $400, while Bortnyk earned $250. Grandmaster Jeffery Xiong and International Master Goutham Krishna rounded out the top four, receiving $150 and $100, respectively. Notably, IM Meri Arabidze claimed the $100 prize for the best female performance, finishing in 24th place.

The next Bullet Brawl is set to kick off on Saturday, July 4, at 12 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CET, promising another thrilling showdown for chess enthusiasts.

A Masterclass in Bullet Chess

Nakamura’s journey to victory was marked by an astonishing start, achieving an 18.5/19 score that immediately established him as the frontrunner. Among his notable victories were matches against three GMs, including Bortnyk, Bardiya Daneshvar, and Andrew Hong, as well as five IMs.

One of the highlights of Nakamura’s performance came against IM Sergey Sklokin, where he demonstrated his deep understanding of the Benko Gambit. A brilliant tactical move, 19…Nxa3, showcased his mastery of the middlegame, leaving Sklokin scrambling for answers.

Despite Nakamura’s early dominance, Bortnyk mounted a formidable challenge, going on an 11-game unbeaten streak that turned the event into a two-horse race. The tension escalated as Bortnyk managed to snap Nakamura’s winning streak, capitalizing on an endgame blunder. However, Nakamura’s lead remained intact as the final quarter approached.

A Thrilling Conclusion

As the competition neared its end, the stakes were high. The next encounter between Nakamura and Bortnyk would determine the outcome of the tournament. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the evaluation swinging back and forth multiple times. Despite his frustrations, Nakamura acknowledged the importance of the win during his Kick stream, stating, “That was an important win, an important win. Not a good game but a win nonetheless.”

In the final stretch, Nakamura maintained his composure, scoring a solid 10.5/15 to seal his victory and quash any hopes of a Bortnyk comeback. With this win, Nakamura is now just 10 titles away from surpassing the all-time leaderboard, previously held by the late GM Daniel Naroditsky.

Looking Ahead

As the chess community celebrates Nakamura’s latest achievement, all eyes will be on the next Bullet Brawl. With the competition heating up and new challengers emerging, the excitement is palpable. Will Nakamura continue his reign, or will a new contender rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.
