Hikaru Nakamura Dominates Bullet Brawl, Extends Winning Streak in 2026
In a thrilling return to the Bullet Brawl arena, Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura showcased his unmatched prowess, clinching victory for the first time since January and maintaining his flawless 2026 record. Competing against a formidable field of 130 players, Nakamura scored an impressive 52.5 out of 65 points, amassing a total of 172 points—20 points ahead of second-place finisher GM Oleksandr Bortnyk.
The stakes were high, with Nakamura and Bortnyk taking home $400 and $250, respectively. GMs Dmitry Andreikin and Tuan Minh Le secured third and fourth places, earning $150 and $100. Additionally, FM Anastasia Avramidou triumphed in the women’s category, scoring 103 points and claiming the $100 prize.
The Bullet Brawl, known for its fast-paced, high-stakes format, saw Nakamura return to form after a focus on classical chess. His performance was nothing short of spectacular, highlighted by a remarkable 15-game winning streak that left competitors scrambling to keep pace.
Despite early setbacks against GM Cristobal Henriquez Villagra and CM Nika Volkov, Nakamura quickly regained his footing, employing a series of tactical maneuvers that left his opponents bewildered. One standout moment came against Andreikin, where Nakamura executed an eight-move combination, establishing a decisive material advantage.
Nakamura’s dominance was evident in his matchups against Bortnyk, where he secured a clean 3-0 sweep. Only two players, GM David Paravyan and FM Havard Haug, managed to defeat Nakamura more than once throughout the tournament, underscoring the American’s iron grip on the competition.
Avramidou’s performance was equally commendable, as she continued her legacy as one of the top female players in Bullet Brawl history. Her victory over Filipino IM Michael Concio Jr. was a highlight, showcasing her tactical acumen.
With this victory marking his sixth in 2026 alone, Nakamura has now doubled the Bullet Brawl titles of any other player, solidifying his status as the GOAT of the format. The next edition of Bullet Brawl is set for Saturday, May 9, at 12 PM ET, promising more electrifying chess action.
