The tension is palpable in Toronto as the FIDE Candidates Tournament enters its final stretch. In the 11th round, the action was intense with three decisive games out of four in each section, showcasing the high stakes and pressure on the players.

In the Open section, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi took the lead with a hard-fought victory over GM Vidit Gujrathi. Meanwhile, American GM Hikaru Nakamura boosted his chances with a crucial win over GM Praggnanandhaa R., positioning himself just half a point behind Nepomniachtchi. GM Gukesh D. held his ground against GM Fabiano Caruana, while GM Alireza Firouzja secured a win against GM Nijat Abasov.

Looking ahead, Nakamura will face Firouzja, Gukesh will take on Abasov, Nepo will play against Pragg, and Caruana will challenge Vidit in the upcoming rounds.

In the Women’s section, the tournament is now a battle between Chinese GMs Lei Tingjie and Tan Zhongyi, who are leading the pack. GM Aleksandra Goryachkina suffered a setback with a loss to GM-Elect Vaishali Rameshbabu, while GM Kateryna Lagno’s hopes took a hit in her game against Tan.

With Lei trailing Tan by half a point, the competition remains fierce. Both Lei and Tan will play with the black pieces in the next round, facing Lagno and IM Nurgyul Salimova, respectively.
