Clash of Indian Titans: Divya Deshmukh and R Vaishali Battle to a Draw in FIDE Candidates 2026 Round 2
R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh: A Royal Clash Ends in Stalemate at FIDE Candidates 2026
NEW DELHI: The second round of the FIDE Candidates 2026 kicked off with an air of grandeur on Monday, as five-time world champion and FIDE Deputy President Viswanathan Anand graced the event by making the ceremonial first move at the board of rising stars Divya Deshmukh and R Vaishali. The anticipation was palpable, with many hoping for a decisive outcome to break the deadlock from the opening day.
However, the day unfolded as a testament to resilience, with every game in both the Open and Women’s categories concluding in draws at the picturesque Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos, Cyprus.
Game of the Day: Divya Deshmukh vs R Vaishali
The standout match of the day was undoubtedly the all-Indian showdown between Divya and Vaishali. Playing with the White pieces, Divya initially seized a significant advantage in a Queen’s Gambit Declined setup, creating a position that many believed would lead to victory.
Veteran Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay commented on the match, stating, “Divya was pressing on the queenside, but on move 34, instead of playing the normal 34…b5, which would head toward an obvious draw, Vaishali decided to exchange knights with 34…Ne4.” This bold move set the stage for a dramatic turn of events.
Thipsay elaborated, “That decision could have been really dangerous because, after that, the position was a forced win for Divya. However, she fell into a trap laid by Vaishali.” On the 37th move, Divya opted for Qg3, aiming to trap Vaishali’s queen, a choice that proved fatal.
In a stunning display of tactical brilliance, Vaishali executed a queen sacrifice with 40…Qxh3+, turning the tables and leading the game into a drawn rook ending. “Vaishali’s 40th move must have been planned as far back as her 34th. It was a deep combination,” Thipsay noted, highlighting the strategic depth of the encounter.
A Strategic Phase in the Open Section
Meanwhile, the Open section saw a more subdued atmosphere following the excitement of Day 1. R Praggnanandhaa, fresh off a victory against Anish Giri, faced China’s Wei Yi. Although Praggnanandhaa held a slight edge, Wei Yi’s cautious approach ensured the game remained balanced.
Thipsay remarked, “Day two in the open section saw some sort of boring games. Players were just taking an overall review of the style and strength of the other participants.” Hikaru Nakamura also found himself in a defensive position against Andrey Esipenko, managing to salvage a theoretical draw despite being a pawn down.
As the tournament progresses into Round 3, the leaderboard remains tightly packed, with Javokhir Sindarov, Fabiano Caruana, and R Praggnanandhaa all sitting on 1.5/2.
Looking Ahead
With the first half of the tournament unfolding, players are expected to adopt a more aggressive approach in the coming rounds. “The desperate play will likely come in the second half,” Thipsay concluded, hinting at the thrilling chess battles yet to come.
