Sindarov Stuns Praggnanandhaa in Thrilling Candidates Round; Caruana Takes Lead

NAGPUR: In a dramatic showdown at the Candidates Tournament, world champion Javokhir Sindarov showcased his tactical brilliance, sacrificing a knight for two pawns to secure a pivotal victory over India’s rising star, Praggnanandhaa R. This victory not only marked Sindarov’s ascent but also placed him alongside Fabiano Caruana at the top of the leaderboard.

The third round, held in Cyprus, saw a significant downturn for Chinese players, with all three competitors suffering defeats. Caruana, the American chess prodigy and world No. 3, wasted no time in capitalizing on a blunder by Wei Yi. After just 19 moves, Caruana seized a decisive advantage, becoming the first player to take the lead in the tournament.

The highly anticipated clash between Sindarov and Praggnanandhaa unfolded with unexpected twists. By the 13th move, Sindarov had offered his knight, allowing Praggnanandhaa to gain a piece but at the cost of two pawns. This bold strategy not only disrupted Praggnanandhaa’s position but also forced his king into a precarious situation.

For the next 18 moves, the tension mounted as both players navigated a complex battlefield. However, a critical mistake by Praggnanandhaa on the 33rd move shifted the momentum back to Sindarov. Under pressure and facing time constraints, Praggnanandhaa fell into a trap, marking his first defeat in 40 moves.

Meanwhile, the games between Germany’s Matthias Bluebaum and Russia’s Andrey Esipenko, as well as Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri, ended in draws after 41 moves, showcasing a battle of wits without decisive outcomes.

In the women’s section, Kazakhstan’s 22-year-old sensation Bibisara Assaubayeva made headlines by defeating world No. 4 Zhu Jiner of China. Utilizing the Canal Attack of Sicilian Defense, Assaubayeva executed key moves on the 25th and 31st turns, ultimately gaining two pawns and securing victory after 43 moves.

Ukrainian-born Russian GM Kateryna Lagno also made waves, overcoming 2017 Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi in a thrilling 54-move encounter. Despite early opportunities for Lagno, a series of missteps allowed Zhongyi to fight back, but Lagno ultimately emerged victorious, sharing the lead with Assaubayeva.

India’s Vaishali Rameshbabu, the lowest-ranked candidate, continued her impressive run with a third consecutive draw against Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk. Opting for the Italian Game, both players displayed flawless technique, resulting in a balanced rook endgame that concluded after 41 moves.

In a marathon battle lasting 5.5 hours, Divya Deshmukh fought valiantly against Russia’s Aleksandra Goryachkina, ultimately securing a draw after an exhausting 81 moves.
