Sindarov’s Stellar Victory Over Praggnanandhaa: A Turning Point in the Candidates Tournament

In a gripping 10th round of the Candidates chess tournament in Cyprus, Javokhir Sindarov capitalized on R Praggnanandhaa’s oversight, securing a record-breaking sixth win in the event’s history. As Sindarov surged to eight points, Vaishali’s draw kept the sibling spirit alive amidst the competition.

Sindarov Dominates Praggnanandhaa in Candidates Tournament Showdown

Cyprus – In a gripping encounter at the Candidates chess tournament, R Praggnanandhaa faced a harsh reality check against Uzbekistan’s rising star, Javokhir Sindarov. The match, which unfolded over 53 intense moves, saw Praggnanandhaa overlook a critical threat on the 22nd turn, allowing Sindarov to capitalize and secure a decisive victory.

Sindarov, who had previously missed a winning opportunity against Germany’s Matthias Blubaum, was in no mood for mercy this time. His strategic prowess shone through as he executed a flawless game, marking his sixth win in the history of the Candidates tournament since its inception in 2013. With this victory, Sindarov surged to the top of the leaderboard with eight points, leaving second-placed Anish Giri trailing by two points.

Praggnanandhaa’s oversight, particularly his 18th move (Qe7), raised eyebrows among chess experts, who questioned why he took an astonishing 31 minutes to make the decision. The blunder allowed Sindarov to seize his queen, leading to an unfavorable endgame of queen and five pawns against two rooks and two pawns. The Indian prodigy, who had been co-leading the tournament, now finds himself with only four points.

Despite her brother’s setback, R Vaishali kept the family’s hopes alive by securing a draw against Anna Muzychuk. This result brought her total to six points, making her the sole leader in the women’s section. Vaishali, the lowest seed in the event, has proven her mettle, having drawn her earlier match against Muzychuk in the third round.

As the tournament progresses, the stakes are high. Anish Giri, with six points, needed a win to close the gap with Sindarov but faced a formidable opponent in Hikaru Nakamura, against whom he has not won in classical chess for over a decade.

With four rounds remaining, the leaderboard stands as follows:

Open Section:

  1. Javokhir Sindarov – 8 points
  2. Anish Giri – 6 points
  3. Fabiano Caruana – 5 points

Women’s Section:

  1. R Vaishali – 6 points
  2. Zhu Jiner & Anna Muzychuk – 5.5 points each

As the tournament heats up, all eyes will be on the next rounds to see if Praggnanandhaa can bounce back and if Vaishali can maintain her lead. For more updates and insights, don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel Go Beyond The Boundary.
