Vaishali Rameshbabu Triumphs Amidst Chaos in FIDE Candidates 2026

NEW DELHI: The FIDE Candidates 2026 tournament in Cyprus has turned into a thrilling spectacle, particularly in the Women’s section, where the stakes are high and the drama is palpable. While the Open section appears to be a one-horse race with Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov leading the pack, the Women’s category has morphed into a battleground of unexpected twists and turns.

In a pivotal Round 7, Indian Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu secured a remarkable victory against former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi of China. However, the path to her win was anything but straightforward. Vaishali, playing with the white pieces, opted for the Pirc Defense, a choice that initially put her at a disadvantage.

“Vaishali started with a very passive system, and by move nine, Tan was already in a commanding position,” noted veteran Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay in his post-game analysis. Despite her struggles, the turning point came not from Vaishali’s strategy but from a shocking blunder by Tan.

On move 27, Tan’s knight move (27…Ne4) unexpectedly opened the door for Vaishali, who capitalized on the opportunity. However, the real gift came when Tan made a critical error on move 37, losing a full piece and handing the game to Vaishali. “It was a comedy of errors,” Thipsay remarked, highlighting the unusual mistakes made by both players in such a high-stakes environment.

While Vaishali celebrated her second consecutive victory, her compatriot Divya Deshmukh faced a heartbreaking setback. In a grueling 135-move match against Kateryna Lagno, Divya held a winning position for much of the game but failed to convert her advantage. Thipsay had predicted a straightforward win for Divya, who was a pawn up in a complex endgame. However, Lagno’s resilient defense thwarted Divya’s efforts, resulting in a frustrating draw that left the Indian camp reeling.

In the Open section, R Praggnanandhaa struggled to find his rhythm against World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana, resulting in a lackluster draw. The only notable drama came from Anish Giri, who managed to halt Sindarov’s winning streak, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the tournament.

As the players take a rest day on April 6, the Indian contingent finds itself at a crossroads. With Vaishali at 3.5/7 and Divya at 3/7, both are within striking distance of the leader, Anna Muzychuk. However, their reliance on opponent blunders and inability to convert winning positions raises questions about their consistency.

As the tournament progresses, the Indian players must shake off the “comedy of errors” and embrace the clinical efficiency required to challenge for the title. With seven rounds remaining, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion in the FIDE Candidates 2026.
