Excitement Builds at FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus — The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 kicked off on Sunday, captivating chess enthusiasts with its unique time control rules designed to heighten the thrill of competition. As the world’s top players gathered in the picturesque setting of Cyprus, the stage was set for a gripping battle of wits and strategy.

In a departure from traditional chess time controls, the men’s tournament has implemented a rule that players will not lose on time until after the 41st move. This decision, inspired by the legendary Bobby Fischer’s principles, aims to create an exhilarating atmosphere as players approach the critical juncture of the game. The excitement of a potential time scramble looms large, with spectators eagerly anticipating whether players can complete their moves under intense pressure.

In stark contrast, the women’s candidates tournament, held concurrently in the same venue, features a different set of rules. Female competitors will receive a 30-second increment from the very first move, but they are allotted only 90 minutes for their first 40 moves, compared to the men’s 120 minutes. This discrepancy has sparked discussions among players and commentators alike.

GM Swapnil Dhopade, a prominent chess trainer from India, expressed his thoughts on the innovative time control. “They want to create some excitement, especially as players approach move 40 without an increment. It’s thrilling to see if a player can finish their moves with just seconds left on the clock,” he remarked. “This experiment aims to make chess more engaging for both players and spectators.”

The differing time controls echo a similar setup from the 2024 Candidates Tournament, raising eyebrows among chess purists. The principle behind Fischer’s digital clock, which introduced increments per move, was to ensure that players in advantageous positions would not be penalized for time mismanagement. However, the current setup has led to mixed reactions.

International Master V. Saravanan noted, “Different time controls for different sections is indeed strange. FIDE might have consulted with participants, but it raises questions about fairness.” Seven-time national champion Praveen Thipsay went further, calling the decision “ridiculous.” He argued that while men receive 10 more minutes than women, the increment should not be overlooked. “Increment can’t be compared with time on hand,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges faced by female competitors.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on the players as they navigate the complexities of strategy and time management. With the stakes higher than ever, the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 promises to deliver thrilling chess action that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
