Javokhir Sindarov Dominates in Cyprus Chess Candidates Tournament

Nicosia, Cyprus – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, 20-year-old Uzbek chess prodigy Javokhir Sindarov has created a significant lead in the ongoing Candidates tournament, leaving his competitors scrambling to catch up. On Wednesday, Sindarov outclassed joint leader Fabiano Caruana, forcing him to resign after just 36 moves in a gripping game of Queens Gambit Accepted.

Sindarov’s victory over Caruana, a seasoned veteran and former world championship contender, propelled him to an impressive 3.5 points after four rounds. Meanwhile, Caruana now sits at 2.5 points, with R Praggnanandhaa, Anish Giri, and Matthias Blubaum trailing at two points each.

Despite expectations that Sindarov might take a more relaxed approach following his previous win against Praggnanandhaa, he came out with relentless aggression. His preparation seemed to outshine Caruana’s, as he navigated the middle game with precision. A significant clock advantage—almost an hour after just 20 moves—added to Caruana’s woes, forcing him to make critical decisions under pressure.

As the game progressed, Sindarov showcased his tactical prowess, sacrificing a rook to maintain the initiative. With both knights off the board and an extra pawn in hand, he demonstrated his attacking potential, ultimately cornering Caruana’s king and sealing the game with a powerful combination of rook and bishop.

Caruana, who had recently achieved a live rating exceeding 2800 after defeating China’s Wei Yi, now faces the challenge of regrouping as the tournament resumes on Friday following a rest day.

In the women’s section, top seed Zhu Jiner of China claimed a crucial victory over India’s Divya Deshmukh, who suffered her first defeat of the tournament. Jiner, who had previously stumbled in earlier rounds, needed this win to stabilize her position after avenging her earlier World Cup defeat to Deshmukh.

Meanwhile, siblings Praggnanandhaa and R Vaishali managed to draw their respective games against Blubaum and Aleksandra Goryachkina, while Anna Muzychuk celebrated her first win of the tournament against overnight leader Kateryna Lagno, now representing Russia.

As the tournament unfolds, Sindarov’s remarkable performance has set the stage for what could become one of the most one-sided Candidates tournaments in history. With only 10 rounds remaining, he may only need 5.5 points to secure a chance to challenge D Gukesh for the world crown. The chess world will be watching closely as the competition heats up in Cyprus.
