Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu Shines with 99% Accuracy in Candidates Opener, Defeating Anish Giri in Cyprus
Praggnanandhaa Shines in Candidates Tournament with Stunning Victory Over Giri
NAGPUR, India — In a remarkable display of skill and strategy, 18-year-old chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu kicked off his second Candidates Tournament with a stunning victory against seasoned Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri. The match, held in Cyprus on Sunday, lasted over five hours, showcasing Praggnanandhaa’s exceptional accuracy and tactical prowess.
Playing at an impressive accuracy level of 97.3%, Praggnanandhaa utilized the Grand Prix variation of the Closed Sicilian defense to outmaneuver Giri, who is ranked significantly higher with an Elo rating of 2741. The 51-move contest saw the young Indian player capitalize on two minor errors from Giri, ultimately forcing him to resign after gaining a decisive advantage with an extra pawn.
Viswanathan Anand, the legendary Indian chess player, praised Praggnanandhaa’s strategic brilliance during the match, particularly highlighting a “genius” move on the 29th turn, where Praggnanandhaa positioned his rook and bishop to fortify his defenses while launching an attack.
The excitement didn’t stop there. Earlier in the tournament, fellow young talents Divya Deshmukh and Javokhir Sindarov also made headlines with their impressive performances. Sindarov, a 20-year-old from Uzbekistan, managed to outplay Russia’s Andrey Esipenko in a thrilling 41-move encounter, while Divya held her ground against Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk, resulting in a hard-fought draw.
Divya, who had previously faced Muzychuk in the Grand Prix last year, opted for the Scotch opening and initially held the upper hand. However, a critical 20th-move error allowed Muzychuk to equalize. Despite the setback, Divya demonstrated resilience, ultimately deciding to split the points after realizing her winning chances had diminished.
In another noteworthy match, Vaishali Rameshbabu, the lowest-ranked participant in the Candidates, showcased her tenacity by salvaging a draw against Kazakhstan’s talented GM Bibisara Assaubayeva, capitalizing on a mistake from her opponent in a tense 40-move battle.
The opening round of the Candidates Tournament also featured a gripping draw between top Chinese players Zhu Jiner and Tan Zhongyi, while a marathon 73-move contest between Russian rivals Aleksandra Goryachkina and Kateryna Lagno ended in a stalemate.
As the tournament unfolds, chess enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly watching the next moves from these young talents, especially Praggnanandhaa, who has already proven himself as a formidable contender on the global stage.
