Sindarov Dominates at Halfway Point of Candidates Tournament

Sindarov Leads Comfortably at Halftime in Candidates Tournament

Cyprus – As the Candidates Tournament reaches its second rest day, Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has established a commanding 1½-point lead over his closest rival, Fabiano Caruana. With seven rounds completed, Sindarov’s impressive performance has already matched the total number of wins achieved by the last four tournament champions over the entire 14-round events.

Sindarov’s tally of victories stands at four, a feat that mirrors the accomplishments of chess titans like Gukesh Dommaraju (2024), Ian Nepomniachtchi (2020/21 and 2022), and Caruana himself (2018). Remarkably, even if Sindarov were to draw all his remaining matches, he would still finish with the same number of wins as these illustrious champions.

Despite his strong position, the tournament is far from over. A 1½-point gap can be bridged, especially in a high-stakes event like the Candidates, where players often rely on deep preparation to secure draws when necessary. While Sindarov is currently the favorite, the second half of the tournament could still yield unexpected twists, whether through a potential slip from the leader or a resurgence from his competitors.

Round 7 Highlights

Round seven saw a mix of results, with three draws and one decisive game. Wei Yi finally broke his winless streak, defeating Andrey Esipenko with the black pieces. Meanwhile, matches between Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and Caruana, as well as Matthias Bluebaum and Hikaru Nakamura, ended in draws after 38 and 40 moves, respectively.

The standout match of the round featured Sindarov against Anish Giri. Sindarov, maintaining a significant time advantage, pressed Giri in a queenless middlegame. However, Giri showcased his defensive prowess, ultimately achieving a draw after 85 moves, marking him as only the second player to hold Sindarov to a tie.

In the day’s only decisive game, Esipenko’s choice of the Petroff Defence led to a dynamic encounter. After a critical misstep, Wei Yi seized the initiative and executed a powerful queenside attack, culminating in his first victory of the tournament. With this win, Wei Yi now stands at 3/7, trailing Sindarov by three points.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament resumes, all eyes will be on Sindarov as he seeks to maintain his lead. The chess community eagerly anticipates whether he can withstand the pressure or if challengers like Caruana will mount a comeback. With the stakes higher than ever, the second half of the Candidates Tournament promises to deliver thrilling chess action.
